Math Models...

Hello children,
How are you? Having fun playing or having a difficult time solving the REALLY difficult questions? (those who did it without problems maybe those who did not draw models & have the wrong answers!!!)

Well here they are. My apologies for the bits of blurred scanning. I did it all in pencil :0

Update: Thanks to Haziq's mom for spotting the error in Q4. The corrections of the steps are in red.

Hi all,
Here's the dictation passage.

Unit 8: James and the Giant Peach
I find fantasy novels very enjoyable. There are usually amazing characters in them. Sometimes I find a novel so interesting that I forget to eat or sleep. I curl up in a cosy corner and forget about time altogether. My family members have to search for me. I get annoyed when people disturb me while I’m reading a favourite novel!

Things to bring for Jacob Ballas Children's Garden

Hi all,
here are the things to bring...

Project Work

Hi all,
Here's the details to guide you for your Project Work. Remember,it can only be done in school. It's just a simple project.

Web-based Lesson (IPW)

Essential Questions:
“What material can we use to keep things cold?”

Trigger: “How do we keep ice from melting?”

Scenario:
“Mr Wolf has an ice-cream factory. But his ice-creams are all melting. You are helping him design a container made with a special material that will keep the ice-creams from melting.”

** TASK:
Your group is facing a challenge to keep the ice-creams from melting. Design a container made with a special material to keep the ice-cream without using additional amount of ice.

*Resource:
www.iknowthat.com/com/L3?Area=Science+Lab&cook=
(show ice changing to water and vice versa)
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages8_9/keeping_warm-.shtml
(activity on the conduction of heat)
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/reviewise/science
(activity on conductors/insulators of heat)
www.energyquest.ca.gov/projects/insulation.html
(experiment on heat insulation)
www.school-for-champions.com/science/thermalinsulation.htm

Your Task
Using internet resources, gather relevant information about how to keep ice from melting.

  1. Plan and conduct a test to find the best material to use in the making of the container.
  2. Design a container for this purpose
  3. Prepare a powerpoint presentation to show your findings – your slides should include: a) names of members, b) the objective of the experiment , c) the various materials tested, d) a table and a graph to show the findings, d) a report of the conclusion of your experiment.

Procedures
Step 1 - Choose a Group Role
In your group of 4, choose a role for this challenge. Each role has different responsibilities. You can choose from a Leader, Timekeeper, Recorder and Presenter.

  • Leader - You will be responsible to lead the group and to work together and complete the task.
  • Timekeeper - You are to make sure the group follows the time given and no time is wasted and to ensure that the group keeps to the timeframe.
  • Recorder - You are to record all data neatly in a table.
  • Presenter - You will have to compile all information and data and present the result to the class in Powerpoint.

Step 2Get an Idea of What to Do

Once your group chooses a role, visit

to find out how melting and freezing of water takes place.

Next, visit

to understand the concept of heat insulation and conduction.

Visit

to get an idea of how to conduct experiments to find out what materials make the best insulation.

Visit

for an interactive activity to ‘test out’ the best insulation material (from the range of materials)

Step 3Coming up with your Investigation Plan
Next you will have to plan and conduct an experiment to find the best material to be used to make your container.

  1. What is the aim of the experiment?
  2. What do you need for your experiment?
  3. What do you do?
  4. What results do you want to record?
  5. What have you discovered from your test?

Step 4Designing and Making of the Product
Based on your findings, design and make your container.

Step 5Tabulating and Presenting your Results
Create a powerpoint or prepare a 2D (chart) presentation to share your findings and display your product.
You will be presenting your findings and product to the class as well as turning in a hard copy to your teacher.

Assessment Criteria
There are several different areas in which you will be assessed.
Your group work and participation grade will be averaged from a survey that your whole group will complete.
Your data will be assessed by the following rubric.
For your powerpoint or 2D presentation (whichever you prefer), you will be assessed by several different factors. See the Powerpoint rubric attached.

Science Spelling...

Hello boys & girls,
here's something extra for tomorrow's exam, just in case you don't have anything else to revise (waaaaaaah).

The P4 teachers had came up with this list to help pupils avoid spelling errors or loss of marks when an error would change the meaning of the reason / sentence.

You can use the 'Online Speller' to practice the words.
