English tips for tackling exam questions...

Hello children,
How's your exam preparations? Please ask questions and pay more / extra attention these days during revision.

Here are the tips we discussed in class today. Hope they are useful in helping you attain your desired marks! But don't forget to revise, these tips will not be enough if you don't have the grammar & comprehension knowledge.

Numeral
Money: one thousand dollars/ $1000 (both correct), $one thousand (wrong), one thousand $ (wrong)

Date: 2 November (correct) / Second November (wrong)/ 2 Nov (wrong)/ 09 (wrong)

Time: 8 o’clock (correct if details like night/day are not given)/ eight o’clock (correct)/ 8 p.m. (correct)/ eight p.m. (wrong)

Time: 5 seconds/ five seconds (correct), 5 sec (incorrect for Dictation but acceptable for note-taking)

Quoting of:
A sentence

Pupils can just write the sentence (with the correct punctuation as given in the passage)

OR

The sentence is ‘___________________________.’.

A word/ phrase

The word/ phrase is ‘__________________’.

*no comma

‘Why’ questions

Why was the boy scolded?

-(It was because) he was rude to the teacher.

-The words ‘it was because’ are unnecessary and pupils should be taught to answer the question in a straight-forward manner e.g.

-He was rude to the teacher.
